A difficult thing in P1 is comprehending what the instructor is actually trying to relate with their phrase choices when you don't have experience, words like 'put your arms back', doesn't register well in terms of controlling the glider and how that relates to putting one's arms back. So in learning it's a constant interpretation to try to figure out what the instructor meant to say in order to understand the expectation. I like this idea of kiting hands-free as practice, need to find somewhere to realistically do that as my P1 training area is a steep hill with landing field & nothing steady about the wind. The steep hill limits options, in running you can't change direction much so if the wind starts coming to the side or behind you running down that hill you can't just shift foot position to correct & it can be hard to even detect because it's tricky to look up when running down a steep pocky hill. I need to find a steady light wind with open flat area to practice kiting as described here.

This was a very timely video for me. I am a PPG pilot and just talking about trying some hike and fly yesterday. I travel a lot and its much easier to take a wing and harness with you! I like in New England in the mountains (not really mountains compared to UT) so I think I may be looking it. I have a harness (Not a pod but a hike and fly) and I was considering taking my PPG wing out for a spin but I think I may take a trip out to meet the local pilots first, I think my next purchase is going to be a wing that works for this. Thanks for the info this was great.

This is aviation, just like with any other aircraft you should have a check list to ensure that your gear is in working condition and everything is done. I've had a checklist since I got into this sport, it takes all of ten minutes to get my rig built and me strapped in. I've added things along the way. I think everyone should have one.

  • @IRAfallon

10:32 good explanation, but not quite. You can't release that wing completely with little or no forward speed - the angle of attack must match the airspeed or you are back in the stall zone repeatedly, which is why you saw that cycle of collapses. Always set the correct angle of attack using the brakes - for the current airspeed. Brake the surge for sure, release partially to avoid holding the wing in the stall zone as you say, but not so far that it surges forward into the frontal collapse zone or else you're on a roller coaster ride of pilot induced oscillations. Keep up the good work, love the immense ground handling skills.

You didn’t say much about not getting scammed… Pretty much assume anyone selling anything on facebook marketplace is out to scam you or rob you. If you’re not buying in person at a flight school or fly in or something where you can see the gear and talk to the person, and where there are witnesses… just say no. That pretty much goes for anything. In my town last night someone tried to rob a who was selling his motorcycle on marketplace. The robber got shot in the face four times so I don’t think it will happen again. But yeah, facebook marketplace is awful.

The one thing I would have added: Go to training first! You will learn what decent gear looks like and feels like, plus you won’t be beating up your gear as you learn. After training you can hit your instructor to see if a used kit is a good deal, or old, antiquated crap. (If you are buying used)

I got my first wing inspected for line strength and porosity at BA this year, 2018 Dudek 28 Uni 1.1. Porosity passed exceedingly in 4 colors. The short 'triangulated' lines at the glider (ones that will fail if any usually) barely passed however did not pass to recommended load. Time for all new A lines at minimum, including all the A lines that lead up to the glider attachments.
